À CONTRE-COURANT (ACC), Montréal’s gay and lesbian aquatic club, wishes to announce that the 15th edition of its EAU VIVE swimathon will be held on Saturday, October 2nd 2010 (the weekend preceding Canadian Thanksgiving, US Columbus Day, and the Black and Blue Festival) to raise money for organizations that help people living with HIV/AIDS. Registration starts at 4:30 pm and swimming at 5:15 pm at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal swimming pool, located at 255 Ontario East (metro Berri-UQAM).
Individual or group participation
Each athlete participating individually in the swimathon must collect a minimum of $50 in donations from individuals or companies and, in return, promises to swim 1500 meters in the style of his/her choice. Those who choose to can swim in a team, splitting up the 1500 meters as they wish. Each team must collect at least $100 in order to participate.
Beneficiary organizations
All funds raised by the swimathon will be donated in their entirety to organizations that assist people living with HIV/AIDS. Beneficiary organizations are chosen every year, before the event, by the board of À Contre-Courant, based on such criteria as the organization’s mission, seriousness, and proposed use of funds. Beneficiary organizations in 2010 are: La Fondation d’Aide Directe-SIDA Montréal (www.fadsm.org) and La Maison d'Hérelle (www.maisondherelle.org).
Tax-deductible donations
For all donations of 10$ and more, beneficiary organizations will issue tax receipts to donors that may be included as a charitable donation in their income tax return. To receive a receipt, donors simply need to check the corresponding box on the swimathon donation form.
A valuable experience
As well as a chance to contribute to a good cause, the swimathon gives some swimmers the opportunity to swim a 1500 meter event for the very first time! Snacks and refreshments will be available for participating swimmers, as well as a free massage service. The swimathon will be followed by ACC’s traditional Saturday night dinner at a restaurant to be announced on the day of the event. And for those who enjoy the night life there is the Black & Blue mega-party, which takes place over the whole weekend.
A celebration of life
”The Eau Vive swimathon is a celebration of life and an expression of solidarity and hope, during which our thoughts will be with those who are no longer with us,” states one of the event’s coordinators. ”We believe that it is important for those in the sports milieu to express their solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS. Therefore, we invite everyone who wants to participate - be it as a swimmer, a donor, or a volunteer - to come and join us for the afternoon.”
Free housing for visitors
If they need a place to stay, swimmers from out of town who take part in the Eau Vive swimathon will be housed FOR FREE by members of À Contre-Courant. It’s the ideal opportunity to visit Montreal, meet the members of the gay and lesbian sports community, and, of course, to go to the Black & Blue Festival.
